Boris Kazakov. Nestlings of the Sea

Boris Kazakov. Nestlings of the Sea, 1998, b/w 35 mm./DV, 5 min 40 sec

"Nestlings of the Sea" is a plot-less comic strip, based on documentaries shot at Soviet amateur film studios in the 1970s. Made by drawing directly on 35mm film, the video is Kozakov's belated contribution to SotsArt, continuing the tradition of an ironic interpretation of Soviet culture. Many of the tricks that he uses reference the "parallel cinema"* movement from the 80s. The aggressive "fight for peace" which the artist depicts is only the surface layer of the work. Its real agenda is to reveal the total absurdity of anything offered as official ideology.
